Selection, Mounting Operation and Maintenance of Drilling Mud Decanter Centrifuge for Solids Control

Modern drilling mud system form a closed loop with zero liquid discharge. Therefore everything brought into the mud by the drilling process has to be separated. While coarse particles are separated by shakers and hydro-cyclones, fine solids are separated by means of decanter centrifuge. For 3,000 meters, decanter centrifuge is one of the important equipment for the whole drilling fluids solids control system.

The decanter centrifuge is mainly used to control the density and viscosity of drilling fluids, decrease the content of the solid phase, remove the hazardous solid phase, recycle the heavy spar, regain the left of whirling current separator to guarantee the good performance of drilling fluids and increase the speed of drilling.

The Selection of Decanter Centrifuge

For petroleum drilling mud treatment, we have both weighted and unweighted fluid. Then, centrifuge selection and configuration will not be the same. The well drilling depth is relative with fluid treatment.

Petroleum mud centrifuge falls into 3 types in total. We can classify it as large capacity centrifuge, high speed centrifuge, and barite re-circulation centrifuge. They have their own features and superiority. We can adopt them at certain occasion.

Sontimes due to different drilling condition and well depth, we need configure or combine different types centrifuge together to get ideal performance and save petroleum drilling cost and get more benefit.

Mounting Operation & Maintenance

1. Mount the centrifuge at the top of tank No. 3 far away from the suction port of the mud pump since that may make new arrangement according to actual condition.

2. Make regular check on fasteners for any loose condition, and in each lube point for proper lube condition.

3. As for any centrifuge not operate for a long period, the cylinder and transporter should be washed. It is only when you are sure that no jam and blockage exist that you may start it.

4. Start the centrifuge and let it stand for 10~15 minutes. When you are sure that the centrifuge is running normally, then start the mud pump. Keep adjusting the pump until it is proper.

5. If the viscosity of drilling fluids is too high, then increase dilution water to reduce viscosity so as to speed up solid-state settlement and improve the process capacity of the centrifuge.
