Why Is KOSUN Decanter Centrifuge the Ideal Choice for Drilling Solids Control?

Sep 14, 2013

In the field of oil & gas drilling, decanter centrifuge is the ideal choice for separating particles in drilling mud. As a Chinese solids control company, KOSUN can supply complete line of high-speed, variable-speed and fully variable-speed decanter centrifuge for handling drilling fluids.

There used to be 3 overload safety protections on KOSUN DC Series Centrifuge. One is the safety protection device of the gear box, second is the hydraulic coupler overload protection, third is the control panel with over currency protection. Nowadays as we change the drilling centrifuge structure there are only 2 protections. One is hydraulic coupler overload protection to protect the bowl and the other is control panel protection to protect the screw conveyor.

Hydraulic Coupler Protection

The overload of bowl will cause melting of hydraulic coupler fusible plug and unloading of main motor to protect the bowl. But the power will not be automatically turned off. Please turn down the feeding pump and open the valves to flush bowl immediately or the screw conveyor may be blocked.

Control Panel Protection

Overload or block of screw conveyor will cause big currency and this will cause the activation of control panel over-current protection to cut down the power. Decanter centrifuge is used to process unweighted and weighted, water-based and oil-based drilling fluids ( muds ). Decanting centrifuge is especially effective in meeting fluid-on-cuttings discharge requirements in environmentally sensitive areas. Decanting centrifuge also has high fluid recovery rates and efficient solids control system to significantly reduce the operator’s total mud cost and limit waste disposal volumes.

How does a decanter centrifuge operate?

The concept of rotational separation is similar to rides found at amusement parks and county fairs. In these rides, placing yourself at an angle allows you to overcome the gravitational forces induced by rotation. Similarly, a solids control equipment decanter centrifuge is essentially a bowl tube that rotates at an extremely high speed. The bowl tube is equipped with an internal conveyor which moves in the same direction, but at a different velocity.

Step 1: The slurry is inserted into the centrifuge through a connecting pipe and onto a conveyor.

Step 2: Utilizing an internal feed compartment, the conveyor ushers the slurry through a nozzle into the bowl area.

Step 3: The bowl rotates at high speeds to induce gravitational forces.

Step 4: High-speed rotation separates the solid material from the liquid in a matter of seconds.

Step 5: The conveyor delivers the solid material upwards where it is discharged through a nozzle.

Step 6: After the solid material is removed, the purified liquid is released from a separate output.

The ability to purify a liquid makes decanter centrifuge ideal for waste water treatment. However, there are variety of industries in which such centrifuges play an important role. Similar to other decanter equipment, decanting centrifuges are simple to install and do not require a foundation to build upon. Their efficiency saves time and materials and is an essential component for many blue collar industries.
